Swimming Pool Near Phuket Town: Why Boat Lagoon Marina Beats the Beach for a Swim

The closest proper swimming pool near Phuket Town that you can use without booking a hotel room is at Soho Pool Club, Boat Lagoon Marina, Koh Kaew — roughly fifteen minutes north of the old town. The pool is free to use. Parking is free. You pay only for what you eat and drink. Open daily 8 AM to 10 PM, kitchen 11 AM to 10 PM. Do you know why so many people staying in Phuket Town end up driving forty minutes to a beach just to get in the water? Yes — because almost nobody tells them there is a marina fifteen minutes up the road with a pool deck, a kitchen and free parking. Phuket Town is a wonderful place to stay: shophouses, coffee, Sunday walking street, a genuine working city rather than a resort strip. What it is not is a place to swim. Why Phuket Town Has Almost Nowhere to Swim

Phuket City — still universally called Phuket Town — is the island’s administrative and commercial centre, not a beach resort. It grew up around tin mining and Sino-Portuguese trade, which is why the architecture is so good and the coastline so far away. The bay directly east of town is mangrove and shallow tidal flat: beautiful from a boat, not somewhere you swim. That leaves three options. Book a hotel with a pool and stay there. Pay a day-pass fee at a west-coast beach club, drive thirty to fifty minutes each way, and find the minimum spend is higher than the meal you wanted. Or drive north up Thepkrasattri Road to Boat Lagoon Marina, where the pool costs nothing to use — an option most visitors never hear about, because marinas market themselves to boat owners, not swimmers.

Where Boat Lagoon Marina Sits on the Map

Boat Lagoon Marina is in Koh Kaew, on the east side of the island, a short run north of the old town on Thepkrasattri Road — around fifteen minutes by car or scooter, and about the same again to the airport in the other direction. That makes it one of the few places on Phuket genuinely convenient to both. The marina is a small colonial-styled waterfront community: chandleries, boatyards, a handful of cafés, and the yachts that give the place its unhurried atmosphere. Soho Pool Club sits at the far end, at 23 Boat Lagoon Marina, Moo 2, Koh Kaeo, Ampur Mueang, Phuket 83000. If you are searching for a swimming pool near Phuket Town on a map, this is the pin you want. It is also the departure base for Simba Sea Trips, which is why the marina is busier at 7 AM than most people expect and calm by ten. Soho Pool Club building among palm trees at Boat Lagoon Marina

The Pool Itself: What You Actually Get

Here is the part that surprises people, so it is worth stating plainly: the pool at Soho is free to use. No day pass, no wristband, no minimum spend to get through the gate. You order food and drinks the way you would at any restaurant, and that is the whole transaction. What comes with it: sun loungers and deck seating around an open-air pool, with tropical planting and shade where you want it. Free onsite parking, with plenty of space — a real advantage over the west coast, where parking is often the worst part of the day. Free Wi-Fi. Changing facilities at the marina. And a kitchen and bar running 11 AM to 10 PM, so a swim turns into lunch and lunch turns into sunset drinks without moving the car. One guest, Nolan White, put it in a Google review better than any brochure line: “the food was incredible and the club was a great find as after lunch we enjoyed the swimming pool until evening.” That is more or less the intended use. Opening hours are 8 AM to 10 PM daily, kitchen from 11 AM. Swimwear is fine poolside; a cover-up is expected in the dining and bar areas.

Why a Marina Pool Beats the Beach for a Swim

This is not an argument against Phuket’s beaches — Kata, Nai Harn and Freedom on a calm morning are hard to beat. But for a regular, repeatable swim, the marina wins on practical grounds. No monsoon lottery. From May to October the west coast picks up serious swell and the red flags go up. Rip currents are a genuine safety issue in green season. A pool is a pool in every month of the year. No jellyfish, no undertow, no sand. Small things until you are swimming with children. Shade and shelter on demand. When an afternoon squall rolls through you move under cover and keep eating. On a beach, the day is over. Fifteen minutes, not fifty. The biggest reason people stop going to the beach is the drive — and the parking when they arrive. Outdoor pool and thatched-roof sala at Soho Pool Club

What to Eat and Drink Between Swims

The kitchen is run by Chef Ai, who sources her produce from local farmers and fishermen. The best seller is the Khao Soi Gai at 290 THB — crispy and soft noodles in a spicy coconut curry with chicken. The Soho Smash Burger at 420 THB uses two Australian Wagyu grass-fed patties. Pad Kra Pao is 270 THB, Tom Yum Kung 230 THB, and there is a full kids’ menu with chicken strips at 200 THB and margherita pizza at 280 THB. For a group swim day, the Moo Krata Pork BBQ Set for Two at 690 THB is the communal option — Thai tabletop barbecue with vegetables, egg, glass noodles and broth. Drinks run from fresh juices at 120 THB up to cocktails at 260 THB, including the house signature, The Soho Club, at 300 THB. Time your swim for a Friday and Happy Hour runs 5 PM to 7 PM, with beers from 70 THB and wine or sparkling by the glass from 100 THB — which lands exactly on sunset over the marina. All prices are subject to 7% VAT and 10% service charge. The full list is on the Soho food menu page and in the 2026 menu PDF. Soho Smash Cheeseburger with fries on a wooden board

Add a Sauna and Ice Bath to Your Swim Day

Thailand’s 2026 tourism positioning leans hard on the idea that healing is the new luxury, and contrast therapy — heat, then cold, repeated — has moved from the fringes of athletic recovery into the mainstream of how people structure a rest day. Soho Wellness sits poolside and runs a 5-person Clearlight infrared sauna and Bison ice baths, with a quiet lounge, herbal tea and infused mineral water between rounds. A day pass is 300 THB and includes full pool club access. The usual sequence: ten to fifteen minutes in the sauna, a rinse, one to three minutes in the ice bath, then rest — repeated two or three times. It is the one part of a swimming pool near Phuket Town day that you do pay for. The honest version of the benefits: infrared heat supports circulation and helps lower cortisol, which is why people sleep better after an evening session. Cold exposure reduces muscle soreness and inflammation after training. It is a nervous-system reset more than anything else. If you have a heart condition, blood pressure issues, or you are pregnant, speak to your doctor first — participation is at your own risk. Rainy Season, High Season, and When to Swim

Phuket’s high season runs November to April — dry, calm seas, the island at its busiest. Green season is May to October, with heavy afternoon rain that usually clears within an hour or two. For pool swimming, green season is arguably the better deal: the venue is quieter, tables are easy, and a covered dining room means a downpour changes nothing about your day. In high season the marina fills up, and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are the busiest windows — worth a call ahead on  +66 81 787 7702 if you are bringing a group.

Bringing Kids, a Laptop, or a Group

Families. This is where a swimming pool near Phuket Town genuinely outperforms a beach. No waves, no currents, water you can see across, and a kids’ menu that does not involve negotiating. Under-20s are welcome everywhere except the licensed bar itself, which is Thai law rather than a house rule. Remote workers. Phuket’s digital nomad population has grown steadily, and the standard problem is that cafés get uncomfortable after two hours. Free Wi-Fi, shade, a kitchen from 11 AM and a pool to break up the afternoon makes a decent alternative to a co-working membership — a slow morning of work, a swim at one, a sharper afternoon afterwards. Groups. Long tables, Moo Krata, and the Soho Sports Club upstairs with two large screens showing AFL, Formula 1, rugby and football. For anything with a guest list attached, use the contact page or call the team — nothing is confirmed until you have written confirmation. And if the rain sets in properly, SIMPRO Academy sits inside the same complex with racing and flight simulators. Guests at a party with balloons and bunting overlooking the marina

What to Bring and How to Get Here

Bring a towel, sunscreen and a cover-up for the dining areas. Everything else — parking, Wi-Fi, the pool, a place to change — is already there. Reservations are not required for a walk-in swim and lunch; they are recommended for groups, private events and busy Sunday viewing. From Phuket Town, head north on Thepkrasattri Road and turn right at the Boat Lagoon entrance, then follow the marina road to the far end. Grab and taxis know it. Coming from the airport it is a similar run in the opposite direction — which makes this a good answer to a long layover. Questions, or a table to book: +66 81 787 7702 or info@simbaseatrips.com.

A Place Where the Swim Is Only the Beginning

The best thing about a pool at a marina is that it rarely stays a pool day. You come for a swim, and then there is a khao soi, and then the sauna, and then the sun goes down behind the boats and someone orders a second round. Soho was built as Phuket’s Social House for exactly that. Come and swim. Open daily 8 AM to 10 PM at Boat Lagoon Marina, Koh Kaew. Call +66 81 787 7702, email info@simbaseatrips.com, or just turn up — the pool is free, and there is always a lounger.
