Phuket Sauna and Ice Bath: Benefits, Sequence and What to Expect

A Phuket sauna and ice bath session is contrast therapy: ten to fifteen minutes in dry heat, a cool shower, then one to three minutes in cold water, repeated two or three times. It eases muscle soreness, leaves most people sharply alert afterwards, and helps many of them sleep better the same night. At Soho Wellness, Boat Lagoon Marina, that means a five-person Clearlight infrared sauna and Bison ice baths a few steps from the pool, on a 300 THB day pass.

Key Takeaways

  • Heat and cold do different jobs. The sauna relaxes and warms; the cold plunge sharpens and reduces post-exercise soreness. Used together, the contrast is the point.
  • Sweating does not remove toxins. Your liver and kidneys do that. We say so plainly below, because the myth is everywhere and it is not true.
  • Consistency beats intensity. Two short sessions a week will do more for you than one heroic hour a month.
  • Soho Wellness is inside Soho Pool Club at Boat Lagoon Marina, Koh Kaew — Clearlight infrared sauna, Bison ice baths and a quiet lounge, on a 300 THB day pass, open daily 8 AM to 10 PM.

Phuket Sauna and Ice Bath at Boat Lagoon Marina

Hot-and-cold bathing is one of the oldest wellness routines there is, and one of the few that has survived contact with modern sports science largely intact. The sauna is the older half of it by some distance: Finland’s sauna culture was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 17 December 2020 — not as a health treatment, but as a social custom. That distinction matters, and it runs through everything below.

In Phuket the practice has taken hold quickly. What was two or three venues a year ago is now a real category on the island, and Soho Wellness sits inside it as the poolside recovery zone of a pool club rather than a standalone spa. Andrea and Paul Chappell, who run Soho, added it because guests kept asking where they could recover properly after a day on the water with the group’s boat brands. It is a small, calm space: a five-person Clearlight infrared sauna, Bison ice baths, a lounge with herbal tea and infused mineral water, and the pool and kitchen a few steps away.

This piece covers what the heat actually does, what the cold actually does, how to run the sequence, what it costs, and which claims about sauna and ice bath are worth believing. Some of the claims commonly attached to both are not.

What a Sauna Actually Does

An infrared sauna warms you differently from a traditional one. A traditional Finnish sauna heats the air to somewhere around 80–100°C (176–212°F) and you sit in it. An infrared cabin like the Clearlight warms your body directly with radiant heat, so the air stays cooler — commonly 45–60°C (113–140°F) — while you still sweat freely. People who find traditional saunas overwhelming often last far longer in an infrared cabin, which is exactly why it is the one at Soho.

What you can reasonably expect from fifteen minutes in the heat:

  • Muscle and joint relief. Warmth is a good place to put a body that has been diving, cycling, lifting or sitting on a plane.
  • Increased circulation while you are in the heat. Blood vessels near the skin dilate and your heart rate rises modestly. This is a real, measurable response — and it ends when the session does.
  • Relaxation. This is the honest headline. Most people come out calmer than they went in.
  • Better sleep the same night. Widely reported by regular users and consistent with what a drop in core temperature after heating tends to do. It is the effect people notice most and mention least.
  • Skin that feels clean and warm afterwards. A sensation, not a treatment.

We have written about the difference between infrared and traditional heat in more detail in our guide to infrared saunas, including which suits which person.

Sweating: What It Actually Does

This section used to say that saunas detoxify the body and help expel toxins. It is worth keeping the topic and answering it honestly rather than quietly deleting it, because the claim is on almost every wellness website in Phuket and people arrive believing it.

Sweat is water and salts. Its job is temperature regulation — it evaporates off your skin and cools you down. It is not a waste-disposal system. The organs that clear metabolic waste and foreign compounds from your blood are the liver and the kidneys, and they do it continuously whether you are in a sauna or asleep in bed.

So, plainly:

  • Saunas do not remove toxins or heavy metals from your body. The trace amounts present in sweat are negligible against what your kidneys process every hour.
  • Saunas do not boost your immune system. There is no reliable evidence for it and we will not claim it.
  • Saunas do not lower high blood pressure as a treatment, and nothing here should be read as a substitute for medical care.
  • Saunas are not a weight-loss tool. The weight you lose in a session is water, and you replace it the moment you drink. Nobody sweats off fat.

None of that makes a sauna less worth using. Relaxation, muscle relief and better sleep are genuine, and they are enough. We would rather be the venue that tells you the truth about your own body than the one that sells you a myth with a towel.

What an Ice Bath Actually Does

Cold-water immersion is the other half of the sequence, and its evidence base is narrower but better defined. The cold constricts blood vessels, dulls the sensation of soreness, and triggers a sharp, unmistakable stress response — the gasp, then the calm.

What you can reasonably expect from one to three minutes in the cold:

  • Reduced muscle soreness after exercise. The best-supported of the four, and the reason athletes have used ice baths for decades. Worth saying honestly: the research is mixed rather than settled, with some studies finding a modest reduction in muscle damage and delayed-onset soreness and others finding little.
  • Sharp alertness for a while afterwards. Most people describe it as feeling switched on. It lasts an hour or two, not a day.
  • Tolerance that builds with practice. Your third plunge is easier than your first. That adaptation is real and it transfers, in a small way, to discomfort generally.
  • A genuinely good mood. Not a medical claim — just what almost everyone reports on the walk back to the lounge.

One caveat worth stating: if you are training for strength or muscle growth, plunging immediately after a heavy session may blunt some of the adaptation you were training for. Leave a few hours between the gym and the ice if muscle growth is the goal. If recovery for tomorrow is the goal, plunge away.

Heat vs Cold: What Each One Is For

The two are not interchangeable, and the most common mistake is treating them as the same thing at different temperatures. Here is what each actually does.

How to Run a Contrast Cycle

Contrast therapy is the sequence, not either element on its own. This is how the team at Soho Wellness will talk you through it, and it takes about an hour end to end.

  1. Hydrate before you start. A glass of the infused mineral water in the lounge, not a cocktail. You will lose fluid in the heat.
  2. Shower briefly so you go into the cabin clean and dry.
  3. Sit in the infrared sauna for 10 to 15 minutes. Sit, breathe, do nothing. If it is your first time, come out at ten.
  4. Rinse under a cool shower to take the surface heat off before the cold. This makes the plunge easier, not harder.
  5. Get into the ice bath for 1 to 3 minutes. Lower yourself steadily rather than dropping in. Breathe out slowly through the first twenty seconds — that is the part everyone struggles with.
  6. Rest in the lounge for 5 to 10 minutes. Herbal tea, warm towel, let your body come back to level.
  7. Repeat the cycle two or three times if you are enjoying it. Two is plenty for a first visit.
  8. Finish on heat, then eat. Ending warm is more comfortable, and the kitchen runs 11 AM to 10 PM if you want to make an afternoon of it.

Rules of thumb: never do this alone if you are new to cold water, get out of either the heat or the cold the moment you feel unwell rather than pushing through, and skip alcohol until afterwards. The team is poolside throughout — ask them.

Wellness in Phuket: Where Soho Fits

Phuket now has a genuine sauna-and-ice-bath scene, and it is worth being straight about the choice. Dedicated wellness venues such as Kedr and Renew are built entirely around the thermal experience and run at higher volume, with schedules, programmes and a wider treatment list. If a serious, purpose-built sauna facility is what you want, go to one. Details and prices change, so check with them directly rather than taking ours.

Soho Wellness is a different proposition, and we would not pretend otherwise. It is a small recovery zone inside a working pool club. That has two consequences. The first is that it is quiet: five people at a time in the sauna, no queue, no schedule. The second is that it does not exist in isolation — the sauna and the plunge are twenty steps from the pool, the restaurant and the Sports Club upstairs, so a session is usually the start of an afternoon rather than the whole of it.

One thing to be clear about, because the word “spa” invites the assumption: Soho Wellness does not offer massage, oil treatments or aromatherapy. It is sauna, ice bath and lounge. Plenty of Phuket venues do offer the full treatment list, and if that is what you are after, they are the better address. We would rather tell you now than have you arrive expecting a therapist.

Who It Suits — and Who Should Check First

Contrast therapy suits more people than you would think. Divers and boat guests who have been in the sun all day. Runners and cyclists the morning after. Remote workers who have been at a laptop since seven. Anyone off a long-haul flight, for whom the heat-then-cold sequence is the fastest reset we know of. And a fair number of guests who simply find fifteen minutes in a warm cabin the quietest part of their week.

It does not suit everyone. If you have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, any cardiovascular issue, or you are pregnant, speak to your doctor before a sauna or a cold plunge. Participation is at your own risk under our terms, and our team will happily show you how to ease in gently — but we are not medically qualified and will not pretend to be. If in doubt, ask a professional first.

What Else Is There the Same Afternoon

Because the wellness zone sits inside the wider complex, a session rarely stands alone. Chef Ai’s kitchen runs from 11 AM to 10 PM — the Khao Soi Gai at 290 THB++ is the best-seller and has been since the menu was written. Friday brings Happy Hour from 5 to 7 PM: beers 70 THB++, house wine and Cold River Brut sparkling 100 THB++ a glass, Mojito and Aperol Spritz 180 THB++. Upstairs, the Clubhouse has two screens and whatever is live that week. And SIMPRO Academy, inside the same complex, runs 60-minute racing and flight simulator sessions at 1,300 THB — air-conditioned, which makes it the obvious pairing on a hot afternoon or a wet one.

What does a Phuket sauna and ice bath session actually do?

It relaxes you, eases muscle and joint stiffness, reduces soreness after exercise, and leaves most people sharply alert for an hour or two afterwards. Many also sleep better the same night. The heat and the cold do different jobs and the contrast between them is the point of doing both.

Do saunas and ice baths detox your body?

No. Sweat is water and salts, and its job is cooling you down, not clearing waste. Your liver and kidneys handle that continuously, sauna or no sauna. Saunas and ice baths also do not boost immunity, lower high blood pressure as a treatment, or cause weight loss — the weight lost in a session is water and returns as soon as you drink. The genuine benefits are relaxation, muscle relief, reduced post-exercise soreness and better sleep.

How long should I stay in the sauna and the ice bath?

Ten to fifteen minutes in the infrared sauna, then one to three minutes in the ice bath, with a cool shower between them and five to ten minutes resting afterwards. On a first visit, come out of the sauna at ten minutes and out of the cold at one. Repeat the cycle two or three times if you are enjoying it.

How cold is an ice bath and how do I get through the first plunge?

Cold plunge water is kept in single-digit Celsius — cold enough that the first twenty seconds are genuinely difficult for everyone, including people who do it weekly. Lower yourself in steadily rather than dropping, breathe out slowly rather than holding your breath, and keep your shoulders relaxed. The gasp reflex passes, and after that the minute is easy. Tolerance builds quickly with practice.

Is contrast therapy safe, and who should avoid it?

It is safe for most healthy adults. If you have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, any cardiovascular issue, or you are pregnant, speak with your doctor before your session. Do not use either facility after drinking alcohol, do not do a cold plunge alone if you are new to it, and get out of the heat or the cold as soon as you feel unwell rather than pushing through. Participation is at your own risk under our terms.

How much does a sauna and ice bath cost in Phuket?

A Soho Wellness day pass is 300 THB and includes the Clearlight infrared sauna, the Bison ice baths, the lounge with herbal tea and infused mineral water, and full access to the Soho Pool Club facilities. Memberships for individuals and families are also available. Live rates for both are on the Soho Wellness page. Food and drink are charged separately from the menu.

Do I need to book, and what should I bring?

Booking ahead is sensible at weekends and essential for groups, since the sauna holds five people. Bring swimwear and that is genuinely all — towels are provided, and the lounge has tea and water. Book on the Soho Wellness page, call +66 81 787 7702, email info@simbaseatrips.com, or use the contact page.

Where is Soho Wellness and what else is on site?

Soho Wellness is inside Soho Pool Club at 23 Boat Lagoon Marina, Moo 2, Koh Kaeo, Mueang Phuket 83000 — about fifteen minutes from Phuket Town and twenty from the airport, with free on-site parking. Soho is open daily 8 AM to 10 PM and the kitchen runs 11 AM to 10 PM. On the same site you will find the pool and restaurant, the Clubhouse sports lounge upstairs, and SIMPRO Academy’s racing and flight simulators.

A Place Where Heat Meets Cold, and Nobody Oversells It

The sauna will not detoxify you and the ice bath will not cure anything. What they will do is unstick a body that has been in the sun, on a boat or at a desk all day, and send you back to the pool feeling considerably better than you did an hour earlier. That has always been enough. Heat. Cold. Rest.

The Clearlight infrared sauna and Bison ice baths at Soho Wellness are a few steps from the pool at Boat Lagoon Marina, Koh Kaew. Book your day pass or ask about memberships on the wellness page, get in touch through the contact page, call +66 81 787 7702, or email info@simbaseatrips.com. Come for the heat. Stay for the afternoon.
