New Year’s Eve in Phuket splits into two evenings. One is a public countdown — Patong Beach, Central Phuket’s outdoor arena, fireworks over the Andaman. The other is a table somewhere quieter, eaten at a sensible hour, with the drive home finished before the midnight traffic starts. Soho Pool Club at Boat Lagoon Marina is built for the second one: dinner by the pool, published hours of 8 AM to 10 PM, and free parking directly outside.

Do you know why so many people who actually live in Phuket stay away from the beach on 31 December? Yes — it is the getting home. The countdown itself is genuinely good: fireworks over the sea, a crowd in a good mood. What nobody photographs is the 90 minutes afterwards, when several thousand people leave the same beach road at once and a 20-minute drive becomes an hour and a half.

That is the real New Year’s Eve Phuket question, and it is worth answering before you book anything: do you want the countdown, or do you want the evening?

What Actually Happens in Phuket on 31 December

New Year’s Eve lands in the middle of high season. November to April is the dry stretch — flat seas, reliable sun — and the last week of December is the busiest part of it. Hotels sit at their annual peak, restaurants publish set menus instead of à la carte, and the roads behave accordingly. The full picture is in our Phuket high season guide.

The island’s headline public countdowns have run for several years at Patong Beach and at Central Phuket’s outdoor arena, with smaller family events at Karon and a beachfront display at Surin — that is what Phuket’s published New Year listings have carried in recent years, including Bangkok Airways’ own Phuket New Year guide. Line-ups are usually announced in November, so confirm with each organiser rather than assuming last year’s programme repeats.

One date note for the 2026–27 turn: 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday and 1 January 2027 on a Friday. That matters more than it sounds, and we will come back to it.

New Year’s Eve Phuket: Beach Countdown or Marina Evening?

These are two different nights, not two versions of the same night. Comparing them honestly is more useful than pretending one wins:

Beach countdown (Patong, Karon, Surin)Marina evening (Boat Lagoon)
What you are there forFireworks, crowd, midnightDinner, conversation, an early finish
Typical arrival time8–9 PM to get a spot6–7 PM, straight to a table
Crowd sizeThousands on one stretch of sandA full but seated venue
Getting thereBeach-road traffic from mid-afternoon~15 minutes north of Phuket Town, off the bypass
ParkingPaid, scarce, often a long walkFree onsite, plenty of space
Getting homeThe hard part — allow 60–90 extra minutesOut before the island moves

Plenty of people do both: eat at the marina at seven, drive to a beach by nine. That is the version we would recommend to a first-time visitor, and it is why this post is a plan rather than a pitch.

How to Plan Your New Year’s Eve at Boat Lagoon Marina

Eight steps, in the order they actually need doing:

  1. Decide by mid-December whether you are chasing midnight. Everything else follows from that one answer — the table time, the transport, the bedtime.
  2. Enquire early if your group is more than six. Large parties and private hire go through the Soho contact form, +66 81 787 7702, or info@simbaseatrips.com. A deposit may apply.
  3. Get the confirmation in writing. A verbal yes is not a booking at Soho — the reservation is live only once our team has emailed you back. That is published policy, and it is the commonest cause of a bad festive-week surprise anywhere on the island.
  4. Read the menu before you arrive, not at the table. The full 2026 list is one PDF: the Soho Menu 2026. Deciding in advance saves twenty minutes on the busiest night of the year.
  5. Arrive by 6:30 PM if you want the light. Sunset over Boat Lagoon lands in the low-to-mid 6 o’clock hour through late December, and golden hour on the deck is why people photograph this place.
  6. Order the shared dishes first. The Moo Krata Thai BBQ set is built for two and scales with add-on plates, so it anchors a table while the rest of the order arrives.
  7. Plan the drive home before the first drink. The licensed bar is 20+ under Thai law, the roads are busy, and a nominated driver is worth arranging in daylight.
  8. Block out 1 January for nothing at all. The pool opens at 8 AM. Come back, swim, eat late, schedule nothing before noon.

Be Clear About Our Hours — We Are Not a Midnight Venue

Worth stating plainly, because festive listings are often vague about it: Soho’s published hours are 8 AM to 10 PM daily, kitchen 11 AM to 10 PM. We do not advertise a midnight countdown, a DJ event or a fireworks display, and we would rather say so here than have you arrive at 11 PM expecting one.

What we run on the night is dinner — properly, at a reasonable hour, by the pool. Anything later or larger is private hire, arranged case by case. If you want the space to yourself on 31 December, ask in November, not on the day.

What Is On the Table: Chef Ai’s Menu and 2026 Prices

Chef Ai runs the kitchen and sources her produce from local farmers and fishermen. Prices below are from the 2026 menu, all subject to 7% VAT and 10% service charge (written as ++):

  • Khao Soi Gai — 290 THB++. Crispy and soft noodles in spicy coconut curry with chicken. The best seller — one Google reviewer called it “the best Khao Soi outside of Chiang Mai”.
  • Moo Krata Pork BBQ Set for Two — 690 THB++. The communal one. Sliced beef or seafood +200 THB++; extra vegetables, egg and noodles +150 THB++.
  • Soho Smash Burger — 420 THB++. Two 100g Australian Wagyu patties, house sauce, brioche.
  • Slow Cooked Lamb Shank in Red Wine Sauce — 590 THB++. Order this if it is the celebration dinner.
  • Tom Yum Kung 230 THB++ and Pad Thai 270 THB++ for the classics; kids’ menu from 150 THB++.

On drinks: most cocktails are 260 THB++, with The Soho Club — our white, dark and coconut rum blend — at 300 THB++, and a Mai Thai on the same list. Prosecco starts at 1,090 THB++ a bottle, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is 3,500 THB++, beers run 90–120 THB++. The full range is on the Soho restaurant page.

The Friday Detail: Happy Hour Falls on New Year’s Day 2027

Here is the calendar quirk worth planning around. Soho’s Happy Hour is a permanent weekly fixture — every Friday, 5 PM to 7 PM — and because 1 January 2027 is a Friday, it lands on New Year’s Day.

Prices, all ++: Singha, Chang and Leo 70 THB++; Birchgrove Birds Block white and red, and Cold River Brut sparkling, 100 THB++ a glass; Mojito and Aperol Spritz 180 THB++. The sparkling is the pick — half its usual glass price — and 5 to 7 PM puts you on the deck for sunset. Only those two cocktails are discounted.

New Year’s Day: The Slow Version

The pool at Soho is free. No day rate, no minimum spend — you order from the menu and that is the whole arrangement. On 1 January that is the appeal: arrive at nine, swim, order the Soho Breakfast at 250 THB++, let the morning go. More on the Soho pool page.

If the night ran long, Soho Wellness is the poolside room with the five-person Clearlight infrared sauna and the Bison ice baths. A day pass is 300 THB and includes the lounge, herbal tea and mineral water alongside full pool club access.

What contrast therapy honestly does: the heat gives muscle and joint relief and increases circulation while you are in it, most people find it relaxing, and many sleep better that night. The cold plunge reduces muscle soreness after exercise and leaves you alert for a while. What it does not do is detoxify you, boost your immune system or undo a late night — sweat is water and salts, and your liver and kidneys clear waste regardless of how warm the room is. We would rather tell you that than sell you something else.

Upstairs, and the Simulators

The Clubhouse upstairs — Soho Sports Club — has two large screens, bar seating and lounge chairs, and runs whatever is live. Late December and early January is football and rugby rather than Formula 1, which restarts in March, so plan around fixtures, not the Grand Prix calendar.

Inside the same complex, SIMPRO Academy Phuket runs racing and flight simulators — useful for a group with teenagers on a day when the beaches are full. A session is 60 minutes at 1,300 THB, staff-run; packages are 6,950 THB for six, 10,950 for ten and 21,500 for twenty, and one-to-one coaching with an instructor is 2,000 THB an hour, booked separately. The rigs are fixed-base — the seat does not move and the flight rigs are not certified full flight simulators — but the wheels carry direct-drive force feedback and the flight side runs a MOZA joystick and a Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog.

Getting Here, Parking, and Getting Home

Soho sits at 23 Boat Lagoon Marina, Moo 2, Koh Kaeo, Ampur Mueang, Phuket 83000 — about 15 minutes north of Phuket Town, 20 minutes south of the airport, just off the bypass. That is the whole argument on New Year’s Eve: you are nowhere near the beach roads that jam.

Parking and Wi-Fi are free, with plenty of space. Dress code is smart casual at the tables — swimwear is fine poolside, a cover-up expected at dining and bar areas. The licensed bar is 20+ under Thai law; under-20s are welcome everywhere else.

What Needs a Reservation and What Does Not

Walk-in dining does not normally need a booking. Festive week is the exception — 31 December and 1 January are the two nights when turning up hopeful is a real gamble. Groups, private dining in the Andaman Dining Room, and anything using the pool deck as a space should be arranged ahead. If plans change, any deposit is fully refunded more than 24 hours before a dining reservation and retained inside that window; private events run on a tiered scale, and cancellations must be in writing.

Where to spend New Year’s Eve in Phuket?

It depends which evening you want. For fireworks and a crowd, the public countdowns at Patong Beach and Central Phuket’s outdoor arena are the island’s biggest, with smaller events at Karon and Surin. For a seated dinner with an early finish and a drive home that takes twenty minutes rather than ninety, the Boat Lagoon Marina venues are the calmer option. Many people do both — dinner at seven, beach by nine.

Where are the fireworks in Phuket on New Year’s Eve?

Over the water at the main beaches. Patong runs the largest display, with shows at Karon and Surin, and Central Phuket puts on a light-and-sound programme with fireworks at its outdoor arena. Soho Pool Club runs no display of its own — we are 15 minutes inland at Boat Lagoon Marina and close at 10 PM. Confirm each event directly; programmes are usually published in November.

Is there a New Year’s Eve countdown at Boat Lagoon Marina?

Not a public one at Soho. Our published hours are 8 AM to 10 PM daily and we do not advertise a midnight event, a DJ night or fireworks. Our part in a New Year’s Eve Phuket plan is dinner by the pool at a normal hour, plus private hire for groups who want the space to themselves — arranged ahead through info@simbaseatrips.com or +66 81 787 7702.

How busy is Phuket in December?

It is the busiest month of the year. December sits in the middle of high season and the final week is the peak of the peak — hotel rates at their annual maximum, restaurants on set menus, beach roads congested from mid-afternoon on 31 December. Book anything you care about well ahead, and build extra travel time into any plan involving a beach.

What is the weather like in Phuket in December?

Dry, hot and reliably sunny. December sits inside the November-to-April dry season, with calm seas on the Andaman side and very little rain compared with the May-to-October green season. Daytime heat is real — the pool matters more than you expect — and evenings are warm enough to eat outdoors comfortably.

Is there a New Year’s Eve buffet or set menu in Phuket?

Most large hotels and resorts publish a fixed-price gala menu for the night, which is standard practice across the island in festive week. Soho does not run a fixed buffet — you order from the regular 2026 à la carte menu, so a table of six can eat six different things at six different price points. Set arrangements are possible for private group bookings, quoted on enquiry.

Do I need to book a New Year’s Eve party in Phuket in advance?

Yes, for anything table-based. Public beach countdowns are free and need no booking. Restaurant tables, gala dinners and private venue hire in festive week are typically committed weeks ahead — for Soho, enquire in November for a group and expect written confirmation before treating it as booked. Walk-ins are welcome the rest of the year.

Does Phuket celebrate Chinese New Year too?

Yes, and visibly. Phuket has deep Peranakan and Hokkien Chinese roots — which is why Phuket Old Town looks the way it does — and Chinese New Year brings its own celebrations in late January or February, separate from the 31 December countdown and separate again from Songkran, the Thai New Year, in April. Background on Phuket Province.

A Place Where the Year Turns Quietly

Not every celebration needs a crowd. A good New Year’s Eve Phuket plan is mostly deciding what you actually want from the night, then arranging the boring parts — the table, the driver, the morning after — early enough that the evening runs itself.

If that is your version of New Year’s Eve Phuket, we are here. As one guest, Nolan White, put it: “Amazing club! Staff were really friendly… the food was incredible and the club was a great find as after lunch we enjoyed the swimming pool until evening.” That is the rhythm we are built for, on 31 December as much as any other day.

Make a reservation on +66 81 787 7702, email info@simbaseatrips.com, or use the form at Soho Pool Club contact. Boat Lagoon Marina, Koh Kaew — open daily 8 AM to 10 PM, kitchen 11 AM to 10 PM.
